Welcome to ENG1000c: Composition! This course is built around the idea that writing is a powerful communication tool. Writing can enable you to share histories with future generations, explain complex concepts, keep in touch with high school friends, or even change the world. The purpose of this course is to enable you to use writing to accomplish personal goals as well as academic ones.
Over the next few weeks, you will be engaging in a great deal of writing and thinking. My hope is that by the end of this course you will feel more confident in your abilities as a writer and that you will begin to see writing as a social transaction rather than something teachers merely assign to students for evaluation purposes.
I would be lying to you if I told you that after this course, you will be a perfect writer or that you will automatically know how to address every writing situation. Writing is a lifelong process, and no one, not even the greatest authors, can say that they have reached a point where they have nothing left to learn or improve. That is not to say that a course in writing is a lost cause. You can, and hopefully will, learn a much about writing and thinking in this class. The Program Learning Objects designed by the First Year Writing Program outline some of the things that I hope you will have learned by the end of this course.
